Cascais, a coastal paradise that used to be a traditional and charming fishing town, is nowadays a famous resort town in the area called the Portuguese Riviera. Its history as a popular seaside resort originated in the 19th century, when King Luís I of Portugal and the Portuguese royal family made the seaside town their preferred location for the summer retreat, thus also attracting members of the Portuguese nobility and high society. The beaches surrounding the town to the south and east are the beautiful family-friendly beaches of the Portuguese Riviera, while to the west and north are the wild and windswept surfing beaches, heading to the untamed Serra de Sintra coastline, with its dramatic natural scenery, such as Praia do Guincho. However, Cascais is the ideal holiday destination if you want more than just beautiful golden beaches and nice weather for your holiday. Among other interesting attractions, it provides natural wonders, fantastic scenery, architectural gems, challenging hiking trails, culture, and seafood experiences. Moreover, Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, is also nearby. At the heart of Cascais is the charming historic centre, with its flower-filled cobbled streets and beautiful white houses, that highlight the traditional Portuguese character. Along the waterfront is the fishing harbour, the Marina complex, the Santa Marta Lighthouse, and the fort Cidadela de Cascais. There are fascinating museums, art galleries, boat trips, numerous bars and restaurants with amazing food and wine, and shops. To the west and east, at a short distance and connected to Cascais by scenic coastal walks, one can find Boca do Inferno (a cliff formation where the waves of the Atlantic Ocean crash against the cliff and create a cave) and the fashionable town of Estoril with its famous Casino. In addition to all this, Cascais is wonderfully connected to both Sintra and Lisbon, both of which are easy to visit as a day trip.
